Welcome
The Office of University Outreach and Engagement (UOE) applies MSU's land-grant mission by bringing the benefits of University knowledge to the public. UOE tackles priority issues of concern to society by encouraging, supporting, and collaborating with MSU faculty and community partners to generate, transmit, apply, and preserve knowledge. The aim of this work has always been to enhance the quality of life and the economic viability of Michigan residents and beyond. Learn about the history of outreach and engagement at MSU.
UOE incorporates a model of outreach and engagement, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of people and environments and their mutual interdependence, learning by doing, growing with experience, and improving with practice.
UOE has several departments. Visit the Departments page to learn about the various functions each has and the services they provide.
Priority Issues
UOE strives to be responsive to the changing nature of public concerns. Some current priority issues that UOE deals with include:
- Children, youth, and families
- Community and family security
- Community vitality and economic development
- Technology and human development
Scholarship of Engagement
UOE also strives to advance the scholarship of engagement--the study of policies and practices of university engagement. UOE has developed an instrument to measure outreach and engagement across campus, is establishing assessment criteria and benchmarks for outreach work that will be applicable nationally, and conducts research on faculty adoption of promotion and tenure guidelines. The definition of outreach scholarship evolves by addressing institutional mission, values, and functions.

Dear Colleagues and Partners:
Essential to MSU's land-grant mission as a premier research intensive institution is the notion of the “engaged university.” With community partners, the engaged university devotes resources to generating knowledge about and applying it to the diverse problems and issues of concern to society. MSU's tagline, Advancing Knowledge Transforming Lives, captures the spirit of the mission.
The Office of University Outreach and Engagement (UOE) was created as a central resource to help faculty and departments construct more extensive and effective scholarship-based engagement with communities, organizations, and agencies, nationally and internationally. I invite you to contact UOE to talk about how you might become more active in the engagement enterprise
Sincerely,
Hiram E. Fitzgerald
Associate Provost for University Outreach and Engagement
